The art of folding origami hearts has raised a substantial donation for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.

For every heart folded, HSBC Bank gave $1 to the fund, and yesterday close to 69,000 hearts had been collected. The bank, however, would top up the amount to $80,000.

The Fold-A-Heart campaign was run by the ST School Pocket Money Fund in partnership with HSBC and SG Cares, which is a nationwide movement that seeks to promote volunteerism among Singaporeans.

It ran from Aug 9-31 to celebrate Singapore's 52nd birthday, with members of the public encouraged to produce the origami hearts and deposit them in SG Cares boxes at HSBC branches, The Clementi Mall and The Seletar Mall.

The fund's general manager, Ms Tan Bee Heong, found the community's support very heartening. She said the campaign deadline was extended from Aug 22 to Aug 31 as "many people had asked for it because they hope to fold more hearts and raise more money".

The fund gives an allowance to children from low-income families.

The campaign ended officially yesterday at the HSBC building in Collyer Quay, where the Singapore bank's group general manager and chief executive officer, Mr Tony Cripps, and his staff folded the last origami hearts. "We are committed to give our full support to SG Cares and, as a bank, will continue to do our part for the community," Mr Cripps said.

The origami hearts will be given to SG Cares.
