The Amitabha Buddhist Centre’s Vesak celebration, held at the Aljunied MRT open ground on May 19, saw religious leaders of different faiths from the Inter-Religious Organisation praying for world peace ahead of the Buddhist festival that falls on May 22. The leaders were (from left) Mr Yeo Yew Hock, representative of the Baha’i faith; Mr Ranjit Singh, representing Sikhism; Mr Ahmad Razif, representing Islam; Shri Shah Chandrakant Jayantilal, representing Jainism; Master Benjamin Tan, representing Taoism; Venerable Phra Maha Detwee, representing Buddhism; andHindu representative Swami Samachittananda. Jewish, Christian and Zoroastrian leaderswere unavailable forthe event,which also included a charity lunch for seniors from three nursing homes. Amitabha Buddhist Centre president Tan Hup Cheng (right) also presented a cheque for $10,000 to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund general manager Lau Hui Ling at the event, which was attended by Inter-Religious Organisation president Noor Mohamed Marican, South East District Mayor and Marine Parade GRC MP Mohd Fahmi Aliman, and the centre’s resident teacher Khen Rinpoche Geshe Chonyi.
