Singapore –  Talented young tennis players with hopes of making it big will get a helping hand from a new $100,000 fund set up by UOB in a tie-up with the Singapore Tennis Association (STA).

The fund will cover coaching and training expenses, entry fees for international tournaments and academic-athletic expenses such as tuition support.

To tap the fund, eligible players must meet conditions such as being in the top 90 of the International Tennis Federation world rankings and showing academic excellence.

UOB’s head of group channels and digitalisation, strategic communications and brand Janet Young and STA general manager Wilson Tay inked the sponsorship deal at a ceremony held at UOB Plaza on July 10.

The signing was witnessed by UOB chief executive and deputy chairman Wee Ee Cheong and STA president Jasmine Quek.

Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo was guest of honour at the event, which was part of efforts to mark UOB’s 90th year since it was set up in 1935.

The bank also held a dialogue during which three young people shared their inspirational stories with about 300 teenagers, who are beneficiaries of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF).

The beneficiaries also enjoyed a guided tour of other attractions: two i Light Singapore installations by UOB around the Singapore River and the projection mapping shows lighting up UOB Plaza 1.

Started in 2000, the STSPMF provides pocket money to children from low-income families to help them through school.

Primary school pupils from these homes get $65 a month, while secondary students get $100 a month. Students from the Institute of Technical Education, junior colleges and polytechnics are given $125 a month.
